I am so happy for all of you. The lion, lionness and I moved into "our" first home a couple of months ago and the change was immediate and amazing. I wasn't just living with them anymore. We were living together as a family, and everyone noticed the difference. We purposefully chose a home that had lots of family space. It's been the best thing we've done for our relationship so far. You'll love it, I'm sure. Good luck!

Long ago a household-advice columnist, Erma Bombeck it may have been, published a slogan I've always remembered: "Miniaturize your mementos."

She told about a man who'd written her who couldn't bear to get rid of his old car. It was the one in which his beloved dead father had taught him to drive. He'd owned it since he was a teen. It was now beyond fixing and filling up a badly needed garage year after year. But he couldn't let go.

So the family hired a photographer. The guy got the car out in the driveway and posed in the driver's seat waving out the window, and the photo got framed and hung on the living room wall. At that point he could junk the car. A bulky, 3,500-pound memento became a memento hardly more than a foot square and 1/2 inch thick.

Similarly, I never collect souvenirs larger than an inch or so. They go in one box in the attic. Actually most of my souvenirs are paper, kept in file folders (in the attic).

I hope this provides some help during your big cleanout!

Cheers,

Alan
